MARY’S VOL, XXVI No. 14 RALEIGH, NORTH CAROLINA May 31, 1963 121st Year Comes To A Close Dean Trotter To Be Preacher Poi- the Itaeealaureate preacher this year, St. Mary’s is looking forward to having the father of one of our students, Bonnie Trot ter. The Very Reverend Jesse M. frotter was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee. For his earlier educa tion, he attended The McCallie School and graduated from Am- lierst College. He taught English in Japan for three years before entering The Virginia Theological Seminary to begin his theological study. Dr. Trotter was granted the B.D. degree by the Seminary. In 1951 he earned the Master of Sacred Theology at the same in stitution. Hr. Trotter has had a very full background in the ministry. After being ordained to the priesthood, be served as Assistant Rector of Trinity Church, Boston and Rec tor of Grace Church, Amherst. While he was at Amherst, he also served as Chaplain to Episcopal students. He came back to the Virginia Seminary in 1951 as a member of the facn'ltv and was elected Dean nr 1956. His Alma Mater, Amherst College, awarded him the degree of Doctor of Divinity in 1956 and elected him to the Board of Trus tees in 1958. Dean Trotter is also the past president of the Church Society for College Work. In spite of the time taken up by his many positions, Dean Trotter has still found time to give invalu able aid to his special project, an Episcopal Theological Seminary in Uganda, Africa. Since the or ganization of the Theological Seminary there, he has given it a great deal of assistance ami has Personally visited the Seminary during the current year. Several of Ids students from the Virginia Theological Seminary are plan ning to go there to teach. Mrs. Trotter is the former Marian Tallman Warner. In addi- tion to Bonnie, there are several otlier cldldren. HUMBER GIVES FINAL ADDRESS Miss Marie Stuart Austin, 1961 graduate of St. Mary s, has recently been elected to Phi Beta Kappa at the Univer sity of North Carolina. The Very Rev. Jesse M. Trotter St. Mary’s will have the honor of having Senator Robert Lee Humber as the 1963 commence ment speaker. Senator Humber was born in Greenville, North Carolina, and has been an out- New Counselors Chosen The position of Hall Counselor is an important one in the rising senior class. These girls are chosen on the basis of an average oi not less than C-. These girls should exemplifv the St. Mary’s tradition of friemlliness, helpfulness, and ability. The newlv selected Hall Coun selors for 1963-64 are Tay Ash ford Sally Adams, Virginia Bur rows Carolvii Broun, Siizie Carr, Ann ’ Chamberlain, Anne Cheat ham, Susan Cook, Gretchen Craig, Nanc.v Dame, Linda Davenport, Svlvi'a Dawson, Anne de la Vergne, Jud.v Dudley, Alice Du Pre Alice Gann, Clare Garden, Meg Graham, Janie Judd, Peachy Lee Lola Kearney, Ginger Mau- pin’ Linda Moore, Judy Perry, Mary Quern, Macon Remsburg, Cindy Schwartz, Ann Scott, Kit Simpson, Maril.vn Stadler, Mary Stallings, Eleanor Stowe, Bet Ta3’- lor Roses Watson, Martha Weeks, Sue White, Margie Winslow, Diane AVoodard, and Day Stu dents Counselors are Carol Ashley and Mary Preston. These thirtj'-eight girls were chosen bv a Hall Council Commit tee The duties of the Counselors inciiide attending weekly hall meetings, setting an example for their hall members to follow, and maintaining discipline on the hall. The Hall Counselors also come to school a few days earlier to be ready to meet the new girls. Throughout the year, these girls lielp maintain the spirit of St. Alary’s. Speaker, The Honorable Robert Lee Humber, Senator, State of North Carolina. standing member of the North Carolina State Legislature since 1959. After obtaining his A.B. and L.L.B. from Wake Forest, Senator Humber continued to add degree upon degree. As a Rhodes Scholar, he attended Oxford University, where he received his B.Litt. From there Senator Humber went to Harvard University to earn his ALA. and then tinislied his formal education at the University of Paris. In addition, such a man as Senator Humber is most certainly not to be without honoraiy de grees. Recognizing this fact, both the University of North Carolina and AA^ake Forest have presented the Senator with well-deserved honorary degrees. In addition to his work as a senator, Dr. Humber is a veiy able lawjmr and businessman. A mem ber of the North Carolina Bar Association since 1920, he has practiced in Pains as well as in North Carolina. Dr. Humber is a member of the Pitt County Demo cratic Committee and attends the Alemorial Baptist Church with his wife and two sons. Senator Humber is very inter ested in world federation and peace and lias played an impor tant role in the effort to accom plish these ends. In 1948, he was awarded the World Government News Aledal for the most out standing service bj' an individual to world federation. In 1950, he again took part in a movement for world federation by writing the Declaration of Federation of the World. During the formulation of the United Nations Charter at the San Francisco Conference, Sena tor Humber represented the seven member council on international relations. Dr. Humber has also shown a definite interest in the cultural as- pects of life. He has been presi dent of the North Carolina Lit- eraiy and Historical Association since 1950 and chairman of the Art Commission since 1951. In ad dition to these positions, he has been president of the North Caro lina Art Societj" since 1955, presi dent of the Roanoke Historical Society, a member of the Board of Directors of the North Carolina State Sjmiphoin’, and a member of the Tryon Palace Committee. Thus it is (luite eas.v to see how such an influential man should plaj" such an important roll in developing the North Carolina State Art Aluseum as well, as other state projects.
